When a parent is over 80, begin discussing insurance before finalizing travel. A plan's age limit, medical eligibility and covered conditions can matter as much as its premium. A quote available to a younger relative may not be available to an older visitor.
Confirm the age rule and effective date
Ask which date determines age and whether changing the start date changes the quote or eligibility. Have the date of birth ready for the insurer's application, but do not put it in the website's general enquiry form.
As one example, Manulife's published Standard visitors policy specifies a maximum age of 85 and uses age on the effective date. This is a product-specific example, not a promise of acceptance or a statement that every plan uses the same limit.
Separate eligibility from covered conditions
Ask whether the visitor can buy the plan, then ask what it covers. Acceptance does not mean every existing illness is included. Review exclusions and any stability requirement alongside the application questions. Our pre-existing conditions guide helps prepare that discussion.
Plan for a claim, not only a premium
- Choose a deductible the family could pay for an eligible claim.
- Keep the emergency assistance number and policy details accessible to visitor and host.
- Ask when the assistance company must be contacted and what to do if the person cannot call.
- Discuss prescriptions, mobility needs and routine care costs separately from emergency insurance.
- Ask the treating health professional about travel readiness; insurance advice does not replace medical advice.
Prepare a family checklist
Bring the intended arrival date, visit length, preferred deductible and questions about health history. Ask how changes before departure, an extended visit or early return should be reported. Keep written answers with the policy so another family member can help if needed.
Request an insurance consultation with Rajni Bala in English, Punjabi or Hindi. Acceptance, coverage for a particular condition and claim payments are not guaranteed. Review the Super Visa insurance requirements and current insurer contract before buying.
